Name:Derek Jacoby
Bio:

My career spans several phases in both industry and academia. Initially, I was a software developer in the biostatistics department at MD Anderson Cancer Center, focused primarily on Bayesian monitoring boundaries for clinical cancer trials. I then spent several years at Compaq Computer Corporation working on software for consumer products. The next phase of my career was a dozen years at Microsoft where I ran teams developing system administration tools for the Windows Platform, and then spent 5 years at Microsoft Research developing natural language applications for mobile devices.

In 2008, I returned to Canada and academia at the University of Victoria, pursuing projects in meeting recording and analysis (including topic identification) and later on the classification and analysis of ElectroEncephalography data from consumer EEG headsets used for neurofeedback to treat Attention Deficit Disorder. Since 2015, most of my time has gone to projects in data visualization in Virtual Reality, and specifically to sensor fusion projects involving satellite analytics and ground or ocean-based sensors. Machine learning approaches to time-series data remains a core interest spanning many of these topics.

Currently, I remain in a research position at UVic, but also run QVirt Labs, a small software consultancy. I also founded and run the local Victoria Makerspace, where I am involved in many robotics and computer-vision projects and I am an avid sailor.
